The Robert Noyce Scholarship Program is a National Science Foundation funded program designed to recruit and prepare talented STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students for a career in middle and high school teaching. At CSU, this project is a collaborative effort among the College of Natural Sciences, Walter Scott Jr. College of Engineering, Warner College of Natural Resources, College of Health and Human Sciences, and the CSU STEM Center.

The scholarship program is open to degree-seeking students who have:

• earned at least 60 credits
• are majoring in a STEM field
• have a minimum 2.8 GPA to be competitive
• would like to pursue a teaching career in science, engineering, or mathematics

The scholarship program is also open to non degree-seeking, post-baccalaureates enrolled in a teaching certification program at CSU.

• by collaborating with mentors and colleagues across the country
• by helping create opportunities for all students

Scholarship recipients will receive:

• $5,000 scholarship per academic semester for up to four semesters (total of $20,000)
• mentoring and professional development supports

Scholarship recipients are required to complete one year of teaching for every one semester of scholarship received. At least one school in the school district you teach in must be considered high-needs.

*High-need school districts meet one of the following criteria for at least one school within the district:
1. a high percentage of students who qualify for free-and-reduced lunch
2. a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which they were trained to teach
3. a high teacher turnover rate
**If the teaching obligation is not met, the scholarship converts to a loan, appreciates interest, and must be repaid in full.

• 2 letters of recommendation
• Answer the following four (4) questions – maximum 3 pages.

1. Describe why you want to enter the teaching profession.
2. Describe any unique qualities which set you apart from others who might be applying for the Noyce Scholarship.
3. The Noyce Scholarship requires recipients to teach in schools identified as “high needs” (e.g., high teacher turnover, lack of STEM-endorsed teachers, or high percentage of students qualifying for free-and-reduced lunch). What strengths do you bring that would support students in these schools?
4. Drawing on your own educational experience, what qualities do you think are necessary for teachers to be effective?

The application period for 2024 opens on December 1st, 2023. Applications on the website are due April 5th, 2024.
